Community Colleges Offer EPA/HUD-Approved Building Renovation Training

TRENTON, N.J.—Beginning in January 2011, New Jersey's community colleges, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, will offer a comprehensive series of training courses to meet the federal and state requirements for New Jersey contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that may disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child-care facilities and multi-family dwellings.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New Jersey Department of Community Affairs have approved New Jersey's community colleges, through the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development, as the accredited training provider for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/Department of Housing and Urban Development (EPA/HUD) Renovation, Repair and Painting Program.

Contractors must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Firms must use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved providers to follow lead-safe work practices. Renovators include renovation contractors, maintenance workers in multi-family housing, painters, and other specialty trades.

The NJ Department of Community Affairs is subsidizing the training through the state's community colleges to reduce the training costs for contractors and their workers.

The training offers four certificates to attendees in one combined 20-hour class for the low subsidized tuition of $190 per person plus $72 for text and materials.

The combined package includes:
- EPA Model Renovator Initial Certificate
- EPA Dust Sampling Technician Certificate
- NJ DCA Rules & Regulations Certificate
- OSHA Hazardous Communications Certificate

Certificates are awarded upon successful completion and will be distributed after the conclusion of the course.
