NJ STARS II Scholarship Remains Unchanged for Fall 2011 StudentsTRENTON, N.J.— The New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Reward Scholarship (NJ STARS) for community college students and NJ STARS II scholarship for juniors and seniors at NJ's public colleges and universities will remain unchanged after Governor Chris Christie signed the FY2012 State Budget into law on June 30th. NJ STARS will provide full tuition community college scholarships for students who graduate high school in the top 15 percent of their class. NJ STARS II will provide $6,000 per year tuition scholarships to NJ STARS students who earn their associate degrees at community colleges with grade point averages (GPAs) between 3.25 and 3.49 and transfer to New Jersey's public four-year colleges or universities to complete their baccalaureate degrees. For NJ STARS students who complete their associate degrees at community colleges with GPAs of 3.5 to 4.0, NJ STARS II will provide $7,000 per year tuition scholarships. According to NJ STARS legislation, the State will cover half of the cost of the NJ STARS II tuition scholarship and the participating four-year colleges and universities will cover the other half. NJ Community Colleges Promote Mental Health Awareness During the first week of October, New Jersey's community colleges, in partnership with the Governor's Council on Mental Health Stigma, will hold events designed to generate awareness about mental health among community college students. The New Jersey Council of County Colleges honored New Jersey's 36 best and brightest community college students and their families at its 17th annual Phi Theta Kappa Day celebration on Thursday, May 5. Community Colleges Offer EPA/HUD-Approved Building Renovation Training New Jersey's community colleges, will offer training courses to meet the federal and state requirements for contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that may disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child-care facilities and multi-family dwellings. Programs for the Unemployed New Jersey's 19 community colleges have announced several statewide initiatives to serve people who have lost their jobs, or are uncertain about their future employment status. |
